I am most influenced by traditional Japanese tea ceremony implements from the last five centuries, and by Northwest artists from the last five decades. My pottery combines my sense of design and emotion with materials dug from the ground.
As I attempt to understand clay, I begin to recognize the perfection of imperfection, and the uncontrollable aspects of clay and fire captivate me.
The glazed works that I create are fired in my propane kiln to temperatures exceeding 2400 degrees. My glazes are incredibly temperamental and are a gentle surprise every time I open the kiln.
The wood fire works that I shape are placed in the kiln entirely unglazed and rely absolutely on the fire for their appearance. The blue and orange colors as well as the green glass drips inundate the pots as the flame and ash fly by.
